Zambia

I tend to stay away from places where everyone else goes. If that appeals to you, too, there’s no better place to do that than the southern sector of South Luangwa National Park. Luangwa is a little more of a chore to get to than the popular parks like Chobe in Botswana or Tanzania’s Serengeti.

For that reason it still has plenty of untrammeled spaces and large quantities of lovely animals to spy on. And its remoteness is part of the fun. The planes you take to get there get smaller and smaller, the airports where you land become more modest and self-effacing, eventually resembling nothing so much as a neighborhood diner.
